A Petite’s Secret : How to Look Taller in Photos

Being a shortie since I can remember, I lacked of confidence back in the days. Those days I can’t accept the fact that I was petite. It runs in the genes. It’s something I cannot change even after my effort in eating traditional Chinese pills and disgusting medications, playing basketball, jumping rope and lots of stretching. Thankfully, my confidence slowly rose when I learned to love me the way I am. Since I pursued my studies in fashion design, I also learned much more about photography and styling, along with some new tips and tricks on how to deal with body shapes and sizes. What to wear according to your height and body shape, and how to highlight your best features. In this post, I’d like to share some of my personal tricks on how I look taller and skinnier in photos! By the way, I’m 4’9, and currently 47 kg, just so you know.

After series and series of photoshoots, I am better now in front of the camera and already know my best angles. Angle DOES play a huge contribution, people, note that. My facial shape is round, and I have a very chubby cheeks. You can’t really tell from my pics, can you? It’s because I usually cover a bit of my face with my hair, and I look sideways often. I have a jawline, it’s a feature I love and I highlight most of the time. When I’m taking a head to toe outfit picture, I always ask the photographer to squat a bit and snap from a lower angle, camera closer to the floor and lens facing up, around 45 degree angle. It looks pretty complicated but in real life it’s easy to do and quite simple, actually. Plus, you need to POSE for pictures! When standing, try seperating your feet apart ( not too wide, please ) and let one support your body weight. The other is just relaxed, but pointed towards the camera.

Recently, I really adore wearing long culottes. Especially the floor-length ones. It has 2 benefits, one is making my legs look longer and also slimmer. Yes, certain culottes make my legs look slimmer, like this high-waisted one with buttons on the sides. It’s undeniable that high-waisted bottoms make you look slimmer and taller because it tricks the eye into thinking you’re taller by elongating your lower body. Really loving this piece too in particular because the side slit is adjustable, so I can expose my legs or hide it as I want to. With extra flare and wider hem, you’ll achieve the longer leg illusion. Oh and don’t forget that it’s best to pair this kind of pants with a cropped top or a top that you can tuck in.

Heeld Boots : Bowbowshoes

A stripes culottes is definitely very hot this season, and I am joining the hype, because it adds the illusion of height! In the photo below, I am rocking a flare one with long vertical lines because well, it makes me look longer and also covers the widest part of my upper thigh.

Pointed shoes ( Heeled, even flat. Because you can’t expect to always wear heels daily. 1 it’s tiring, 2 it’s unhealthy for your feet ) lengthen your leg line, believe me or not. It’s a shoe you should opt for if you have wide feet too. So I say, buy more of it and use it more often! And try pairing it with a long flare pants, with the hem just above the ground, exposing the pointy tip of your shoe. Try these tips and thank me later.
